  • 3/4″ thick plywood
  • Command picture hanging strips
  • Drill with 1/2″ drill bit
  • Sandpaper
  • Scroll Saw
  • The word “family” printed out in your chosen font
  • Transfer paper or scissors and a pencil


  1. Begin by typing the word “family” using your chosen font (this is the only time you’ll use gadgets for this project). Ensure that it’s large enough to fit an 8 ½” x 11” paper, then print it out.
  2. Use your transfer paper to transfer it to the wood. If you don’t have transfer paper, you can cut out the word instead. After which, tape the paper on the plywood so that when you trace the letters, the paper won’t move an inch. Trace it using your pencil.
  3. Use your scroll saw to go around all the outer edges of the wood. Don’t rush this step!
  4. Get your cordless drill and drill holes in the middle of the letters that should be cut out. Let the scroll saw blade thread through the holes, then cut out those inner shapes.
  5. Use a sandpaper (fine grit) to soften the edges and give them a rounded look.
  6. Cut a little circle or oblong shape (this depends on the font you used) from a scrap for the tittle of your letter “i.”
  7. After sanding everything, you can either paint the sign using a glossy color (or your favorite color), stain it, or leave it as it is.
  8. Now attach some command picture hanging strips on the back side and fix them on the door or wall.
